Moving Day
I’ve thrown out the garbage, emptied the refrigerator of all the unused and useless items I thought I needed, and the closets are bare. What’s left is a community of dust balls and detritus that slipped between the cracks and deposited themselves in the hidden spaces below and behind furniture.
There is something about an empty apartment that make one realize they are much bigger than you thought. I realized if I had less stuff, I could move within these walls comfortably. That without the detritus of my life, there is more room to breathe. That living in a Zen like space could actually be better for my health. But it won’t happen. I like my stuff too much.
This got me thinking about the ‘stuff’ we keep in our minds. The clutter of unwanted thoughts. The cabinets fllled with limiting behaviors. The cosy nature of the well-worn, the tried and true, better not to disturb reasons why we need what we need, do what we do, and keep all of it stored away for future use.
But when the future comes, if we’re completely honest, we don’t need half of what we’ve got.
Moving house is an exercise in taking out the garbage. In The Fearless Factor program, I talk about taking out the garbage a lot. When we do that, we start to see ourselves as we really are. Glorious, full of potential, confident in who we are and why we are here. In short, being our best self now.
Space hates a vaccuum. As soon as there is more space, we fill it up. So when we take out the garbage, the job is to fill up the space with stuff we want instead of stuff we don’t want. Cleaning out the closets of your mind is a full time job, and being conscious about what you put back in is the choices and decisions you make to live a fulfilled life.
As I head out the door to my new home, I’m taking with me a lot of the old stuff, but the opportunity to expand and grow is much greater today than it was yesterday. That’s because each day is a new beginning no matter if you are moving or not.
