I’ve been an entrepreneur for the last three years. Never worked harder, never been more satisfied. I also made a lot of mistakes, spent too much money on stuff I didn’t need, wasn’t ready for, and was just plain stupid about. It’s been a case of trial and error.
Throughout the process of learning how to run a business, failure was never an option. The reason why is because I believe we are all failing our way to success. Many people give up around the 3 year mark if they are not pulling in the revenue they want. They also give up too easily because the hours are too long, or they can’t see how they will reach their goals.
If I’ve learned one thing in my lifetime it’s this. There is no such thing as a deadend. There is only a turning point. Whenever we are faced with impossible odds, believe there is a solution. There always is, even if you have to search hard for it.
As we start the next decade, consider this:
- Lack of direction: If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there.
- Seeing things as problems instead of challenges: A challenge is something that awaits a solution.
- Giving up too easily: Failure is just an excuse to stop not a reason. We are all failing our way to success.
- Not investing in the business: To get something out of it, you must put something in. If you say you can’t afford it…think again. It’s your business.
- Not investing in yourself: Self-development is critical to building a successful business. When you know who you are, why you do the things you do, and what you want, then things start to fall into place.
- Not setting clear goals: A goal without action is a wish unfulfilled.
- Blaming circumstances: Instead of blaming or criticizing, take a look at the decisions you took to get you where you are now.
- Having the wrong attitude: Enjoy the journey. It’s all progress in process.
So what does your next year in business look like? Where do you want to be this time next year?
Write out your goals and then describe the actions you will take to reach them. Stephen Covey says ’start with the end in mind’. I like to say start with your biggest dream and then figure out how to get there. Then work it!
