How to do New Year’s Resolutions and Action Plans

by Jacqueline on December 22, 2009

This is the time of year when many people make New Year’s Resolutions?

Frankly, I think they are a waste of time.

Why?  Because for the most part,  it’s a list of wishes unfulfilled.

I’m a great believer in setting goals.  But a goal without action is simply wishful thinking.

Take for instance, the favorite New Year’s resolution.  Losing weight.  How many of us, myself included, say we’re going to take off the extra 10-15lbs we’ve been carrying for the last year.  We’re going to watch what we eat, exercise more and generally take better care of our bodies.  And then…

Life gets in the way. We’re too busy, too tired, too stressed, too lazy, we procrastinate and we deceive ourselves into thinking we don’t really need it. It’s not as bad as we think?

The chief reason people don’t follow through on their resolutions is because we lack the commitment and the follow-through.

In martial arts commitment, focus, discipline and follow-through are key to winning a fight. I’ve learned that it’s also key to having a successful life.  When I’m committed to the action, and make plans to achieve the goals, I get what I want. Every time.

So this year, what are you prepared to do to achieve your New Year’s resolution?  Don’t just think about it. Do the Nike thing and Just Do it.  (They took that idea from Gary Gilmore who was about to be executed by firing squad. He said “Let’s Do It!”)

I know this is common sense, but by creating a plan and taking action in a consistent way, you will achieve your goals. Put them where you can see them. I have mine on a cork board next to my desk. It’s a constant reminder of what I’m striving for.

  • Measure your progress.
  • Make a list of tasks that must be done each day and week.
  • Are you meeting your own deadlines?
  • Are you doing all you can do to achieve the results you want. If not, what new strategies can you use?
  • Get the right kind of support?   Every player needs a coach.  It keeps you accountable and you get some great ideas you’ve never thought about.
  • Above all else, work on your confidence.  This is the number one reason why people fail.  They don’t believe they can do it.

The next question to ask is “How bad do you want it?
