What Does Positive Excitement Feel Like to You?
Positive excitement feels like you are at a party or on vacation. You can’t wait to get going on your favorite activities, or you feel good being with a particular person. You find yourself full of ideas that spark other ideas, and very soon the contagion of that process spawns great opportunities.
- I found this true when I started writing at the age of 41. I found myself overwhelmed with ideas I needed to put on paper. They eventually became five books.
- When I began to sing out loud and in front of audiences when I was 42, I discovered a voice that had been hiding in my shoes. I recorded a CD.
- When I took up the martial arts at the age of 43, I found that I had always wanted to do this and it freed me to explore my full physical potential. At times it was challenging, and when I wanted to quit, my teacher gave me no support beyond, “It’s your choice.” I earned a black belt in karate at age 49.
I started my motivational speaking business when I was 54 and I’m definitely not looking back. There is an exhilaration when I accomplish things I had never thought possible, or never dared to dream.
If you are feeling there is no creativity in your life, think again. I used to feel that way. I didn’t think I had anything to offer, but when I gave myself a chance to find out, positive excitement became my drug. I loved feeling good as a result of what I was doing. So did everyone else.
Sam Keen, author of Fire in the Belly said “fear is the sharp edge of excitement.“ It is one of my favorite quotes. It speaks to the risks we all take when we push ourselves further than we are comfortable with.
So ask yourself this:
- Who is holding me back?
- What would my life look like if I were doing what I wanted to do?
- Where do I want to go?
- Why is it important for me to feel more positive about myself?
- What about that matters to me?
Positive excitement is infectious. It’s what leadership is all about. I inspire you to make a difference in your own life because it made a difference in mine, and I want to share it.
