“The trouble with words is that you never know whose mouths they’ve been in” – Dennis Potter, dramatist.
Currently, we are going through enormous changes in the economy, in our culture and society in general. We are adjusting our values, figuring out what is most meaningful to us, and moving on with life.
But for quite a few people, they feel stuck. Lost in the details of change. Unable to move one way or another because they are afraid they are going to lose everything. They are stuck in blaming and regret and the future picture is catastrophic. The channel is stuck on Yadda Yadda radio and depression is high.
According to an article in Psychology Today it has been estimated that we have anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 thoughts a day. If your mind is predominantly negative, imagine how many negative thoughts you are generating daily—thousands upon thousands. No wonder depression is at an all time high and anxiety is a continual state for many people.
So what if you could control your thinking and shift from negative to positive? What would that look like?
Our lives are created by our minds. We are conditioned to a certain way of thinking about our health, our family our faith. WE derive great comfort from knowing how things are, and that they will stay that way. We don’t like change.
But life is about CHANGE. It’s the one thing we can absolutely depend on. The rest is transitory. And right now, transitions are happening in spades and we all need to make adjustments to our thinking.
We are on a course-correction towards leaner and more realistic times than we’ve had in a very long time. So now more than ever you must start noticing where you get hung up.
- Notice the judgments and criticisms that you use around the water-cooler, or in conversation with friends.
- Pay attention to the negatives that are fueling your life.
- Notice what happens when you choose not to go there.
Choose to have a different discussion that is focused more on the positive and less on the negative.
We are talking here about conscious living. Mindfulness that connects to the truth of what is happening, not to the disasters that might happen.
When I hear clients say they are afraid of losing their jobs, or their houses, or the money in the bank, these fears are real. We can’t deny them. But the other side of this is to ask yourself, “Where am I right now. This minute?”
- If you have a job, a house and money in the bank, is it covering your present expenses? If not, what steps can you take to do things differently so you get what you want?
- Have you made adjustments to your standard of living and resent it, but nevertheless, you are paying the bills, and you’re keeping your head above water. How successful do you think you are?
These are important considerations, and when you can approach life from the point of view of “at this moment,” you are ahead of the game because you will find creative ways to keep yourself in the moment.
Don’t give in to the ‘yes, but….’ scenario. I like to say there is only one ‘but’ in your life that matters, and you are probably sitting on it as you read this!
So here are a few ideas to get you on track again.
- Do some re-evaluation of your life by creating a constructive plan to move you forward.
This will do two things. It will get your mind focused on what you need, and it will start you thinking on ways to implement it. You are creatively problem solving as you figure out what it will take to get you from where you are now, to where you want to go.
- Setting specific goals.
But not just any goals. Be specific about what it is you want to achieve. If it’s a new job, what will it take for you to get one. Go through all the steps necessary to get to the final result. Resumes, interviews, skills, education, whatever you need, put it down on paper and figure out what is the next step.
- Set deadlines for yourself.
Without deadlines, a goal is just a wish. Go beyond the wishing stage. But set deadlines that are in the near future and in the distance. It gives you something to strive for.
The wonderful thing about our mind is…. we can change it.
We have the control.
All the negative thinking in the world won’t get you what you want. It drives things away.
So if you’re really committed to controlling your thinking, and you want to get mindful about what’s going on right now, watch your language, be aware of your behavior, and start making plans to put the changes you want into action.
