Thinking of Writing a Book?

As you get to the end of 2009, are you thinking about your goals for next year?

New Year’s Resolutions are about as flimsy as putting a piece of paper to a candle.  We have bright expectations for changing habits, achieving greater things, giving up the limitations and embracing the dreams.  But what happens?

For many of us, we hold these resolutions until about February 1st and then decide it’s too much work and forget about them.  But for those of you who have strong resolve and a commitment to the process, the next year can be even brighter than last, and you can make your dreams come true.

Do your dreams for 2010 include writing a book? Many people say they want to write a book, but the commitment to the process is all consuming if you are to do it justice.

It took me 12 years to write my first book When The Crow Sings (several incarnations), and two years for the second.  When I first started writing, an author friend said it would take me ten years to get my first book published.  I didn’t want to believe her, but it was true. I’m glad I waited. I became a much better writer in the interim.

I spent the best part of 2009 writing and promoting my second book The Fearless Factor. It’s been a labor of love, and although it’s only been out for about five months, I’ve been doing great.  It’s been endorsed by Marianne Williamson, Susan Jeffers, Loral Langmeier, Margot Anand and many others who think this is a terrific book that needs to be read by many people. I’m committed to making this a resounding success in 2010.

If you are thinking you want to get started on a book in 2010, here’s my advice for what its worth.

  • Do commit to writing each and every day
  • Don’t think about publishing until you know your audience and have a good understanding of what it takes to get published.
  • It can take up to two years to get an agent and a publishing company interested in your work.
  • Consider self-publishing if you know your market and are willing to do the hard work of promoting your book.
  • Don’t give up your day job!
  • Figure out how much money it’s going to cost you to design a book cover, do the interior layout and have it proof read. These are all important steps.
  • Register a web domain with the name of your book.
  • Look professional and people will take you seriously.
  • Be passionate about your writing. It’s what keeps you warm on cold days!

And if you really want to write that book, join a support group and get some feedback on your writing.  It makes a huge difference.

But above all else, write….there is no such thing as writer’s block, there is only a head filled with doubt, fear and insecurity about what you have to say.
